Scaling & Polishing
Professional deep-cleaning that removes plaque and tartar below the gumline — the foundation of every healthy smile.
What Is Scaling & Polishing?
Scaling and polishing is a professional deep-cleaning that removes plaque and calculus (tartar) that a toothbrush can’t reach — particularly below the gumline, where it causes gum inflammation and, eventually, gum disease. It’s the single most important preventive procedure in dentistry.
We recommend scaling and polishing every six months for most patients, more frequently for those prone to tartar buildup or with existing gum sensitivity.
- Removes tartar a toothbrush physically cannot reach
- Prevents and reverses early gum inflammation (gingivitis)
- Removes surface staining from tea, coffee and tobacco
- Freshens breath by eliminating bacterial buildup
- Takes under an hour with no downtime
Signs You May Need Scaling & Polishing
- Anyone due for their 6-month dental check-up
- Visible tartar or discolouration along the gumline
- Bleeding gums when brushing or flossing
- Persistent bad breath despite good brushing habits
Not sure if this applies to you? A short consultation will confirm — there’s no obligation to proceed.
What Happens, Step by Step
Gum Assessment
Gums are checked for inflammation, bleeding or pocket depth before cleaning begins.
Ultrasonic Scaling
An ultrasonic scaler breaks up and removes tartar deposits above and just below the gumline.
Hand Scaling
Fine hand instruments refine areas the ultrasonic tip can't fully reach, especially between teeth.
Polishing
A polishing paste removes surface stains and leaves enamel smooth, which slows future plaque buildup.

Common Questions About Scaling & Polishing
No — this is a common misconception. Scaling removes tartar sitting on top of enamel; it does not wear down or weaken the tooth itself.
Some patients notice mild, temporary sensitivity to cold for a day or two, especially if there was significant tartar buildup — this settles quickly.
Every six months for most patients; every three to four months if you're prone to fast tartar buildup or have existing gum disease.
It removes surface staining and can noticeably brighten your smile, but it isn't a substitute for a dedicated whitening treatment if deeper discolouration is the concern.
